Turning Point Craft Initiative, Shetland

If it wasn’t for the project, I would have jumped over a cliff weeks ago.

A TCPI client

The Turning Point Craft Initiative (TPCI) day centre provides counselling and practical skills for people who want to overcome drug or alcohol problems. Along with counselling, their day centre programme offers therapeutic healing through working with wood, helping clients gain the motivation and confidence to rebuild their lives.

The clients learn a variety of skills which they can then use to create something tangible. One of TPCI’s products is a hand-turned wooden pen crafted in their day centre by the clients who have sufficiently developed their skills. Each pen is made on a woodturning lathe using the finest woods and no two pens are the same.

Turning Point gives its clients something to focus their time and energy on and it’s a welcome distraction for those trying to overcome issues with alcohol and drugs. This stark comment from a client summed up the impact of TPCI: ‘If it wasn’t for the project, I would have jumped over a cliff weeks ago.’
