Sanday Community School

We like playing together on the wobbly bridge. We test out different challenges together.

Local children, Molly and Rosa

The Community School is sometimes described as the hub of island life. As well as promoting the learning and achievement to the 80 children and young people in Sanday, it is also a community centre with excellent facilities. Including, a meeting room, swimming pool and fitness centre open to everyone, including visitors, in Sanday throughout the year.

In May 2009, a grant of £10,000 from the Spurness Community Benefit Fund contributed to an all-weather adventure area for children and young people of mixed ages and abilities.

The new facility is a great new play option for the island’s children and young people, visiting children are welcome to. It’s open at weekends and in the school holidays too. The adventure area has also created a comfortable meeting place for adults, and it’s accessible for wheelchair users, and people with prams.

Here’s what some local children have to say about the ‘adventurous’ new addition to their community…

Kyle - “My favourite bit is the monkey bars because I like swinging and going along the top – it keeps me fit.”

Caitlin - “I like the logs the best because I can climb on them and jump off and it’s fun.”

Georgia - “I like the wobbly bridge the best because I challenge myself to go across with no hands.”

Georgie Lampert's winning designGeorgie Lampert, a pupil at Sanday Community School, won a competition run by the community council to design a logo for the Spurness Community Fund.

She said, “I chose green and blue for my logo. Green because we think of green energy when we think of the wind turbine, and blue because of the sky that the blades slice through.

“I included swirly bits around the edge to represent the wind passing and blowing the blades around.”

Well done Georgie!
