Building new community funds

Establishing a new charitable fund utilising funds released by reorganising dormant or inactive charitable trusts also has the potential to act as a catalyst by providing seed corn for the establishment of a new revitalised community fund.

Once the transfer of resources to the new fund has been competed, the Foundation, working in partnership with councils, would publicise the establishment of the fund and encourage other partners from across the public and private sectors to contribute to the fund. The aim will be to grow both the permanent endowment and distribution elements of the fund by promoting it to private, corporate and institutional donors.

The Scottish Community Foundation has a proven track record of providing an effective vehicle for distributing funds on behalf of individual and corporate donors.   The Foundation currently manages 250 individual charitable funds on behalf of a wide range of individuals, charitable trusts, corporate donors and public sector agencies.   It also has an extensive network of contacts amongst individual donors, professional advisers and business leaders.

This experience and knowledge would be used to promote the new fund and add value to the original transfer of funds by attracting additional contributions. This will allow the fund to develop and grow over time following the initial investment of resources by releasing funds held in dormant or inactive charitable trusts.
