What is OneCity

OneCity aims to improve the quality of life for Edinburgh residents by empowering communities to tackle social needs and divisions.  OneCity raises funds and awareness from individuals and companies for social equality in Edinburgh.  In turn, we award grants to local, grassroots projects working to include people in communities they're otherwise excluded from, for whatever reasons.  Our mission is to be an accessible resource, working with a wide range of organisations and individuals to broker funding, identify local areas of need and assist community-led solutions that "advance and promote education, social welfare, human rights and the tackling of extreme inequalities in income and the alleviation of poverty".

Established on the recommendation of the Lord Provost's Commission on Social Exclusion, the goal is to raise £1.5million by 2008 - £1million of which will establish a permanent invested fund from which grants can be made on an everlasting basis.  The feedback to the Commission was that many local businesses and individuals wanted to give something back to their local community but lacked the resources to do so, and the knowledge of where it would make the biggest impact.  OneCity has already awarded over £50,000 in grants to a range of grassroots community-led projects throughout Edinburgh that wouldn’t have received funding in any other way.

How Grants Are Made From The Fund
Grants from OneCity are made to organisations or projects specifically promoting inclusion at a grassroots level. The emphasis is on supporting initiatives that encourage participation and that demonstrate potential for future self-sustainability.

The expert grant making staff at the Scottish Community Foundation are responsible for assessing all applications to the fund.
