John Arrowsmith Memorial Fund

Background

John Arrowsmith was a man who liked to live life to its full. Born in Wigan, John’s first taste for the outdoors came from the 26th scout troop. His working life began in the civil service followed by national service in the Navy. It was during this time John met David Attenborough who encouraged him to become a teacher; Attenborough could see John’s natural ability to inspire others.

John’s exemplary teaching career took him from Derbyshire to Dorset and finally to Edinburgh where he became a lecturer at Dunfermline College of Physical Education. John loved teaching and he took a Diploma in Special Education Needs and became a Chartered Educational Psychologist.

Known to his friends as ‘Action Man Arrowsmith’, John loved outdoor sports. From pot-holing to cross-country running and from rock climbing to rollerblading John was always up for a challenge. However, his greatest love was water sports, in particular sub-aqua diving.

To remember John, his family - led by his widow Judy and family friend Don Lees - have set up a fund to help people enjoy safe water based activities


Purpose

Grants are awarded to organisations that provide access to water based activities to individuals and groups. Applicants, including those with special educational needs, financial or other constraints will be considered.
