Amidst a tough economic climate, Rio Tinto Alcan is offering a helping hand to cash-strapped volunteer and charity organisations in the Highlands, with the launch of its new Community Fund, supported by the Scottish Community Foundation.

SSE’s Tangy 2 Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund has opened for its first round of applications. Constituted community groups, not-for-profit organisations and registered charities in the community council areas of Campbeltown, East Kintyre, The Laggan, West Kintyre and Southend can apply for funding.

James Watt College student, 29 year old Kirsty Conway from Greenock, has good reason to celebrate this festive season after being awarded £390 from the Jean Parker Brown Memorial Fund. The fund, established in memory of Dalry born Jean Parker Brown, is for mature female students studying in Ayrshire, Renfrewshire and the surrounding areas.
